My mum, the crypto believer.
If you’ve ever watched my videos, you know I’m a giant fan of my mum. I mean, sure, for someone from Lebanon that’s kinda cliché, but whatever, my mum rules.
She’s funny. Free. Independent. Unyielding. A little crazy - not so much as to really be dangerous, but definitely enough to be unpredictable and always funny.
For example, she got her driver’s license when she was 76 years old, and she drives through the streets of Southern Lebanon like a badass, yelling at anyone who doesn’t give her the right of way. And all while talking with anybody who’s visiting by calling them “mon chérie”.
All of this to say, she never stops surprising me. The latest was that she converted her entire village to Ether. She has a cryptowallet now and doesn’t want to hear anybody talking about fiat. Now, yes, in the last year all of her savings in Lebanese pounds have gone to nothing. And even though she hasn’t had much in terms of a financial education, she’s understood some very interesting things:
No government is better than a bad government. I promise you, this is a lesson that Lebanon has learned collectively, and it’s a very bitter one.
Apps are accessible if you have just a bit of patience, and the UX and interfaces have made so much progress. She uses Messenger, etc. - why not use it for money too? It’s got to be better than the banks, where she doesn’t understand anything that goes on.
It’s going up. It’s nice when it goes up. Ok, for this one I’m not sure that when it goes down, she’s going to be quite as enthusiastic, but whatever. For people who’ve lived in Africa, South America, and Lebanon’s recurring economic crises, volatility is a joke - their entire life is volatility. Might as well deal with it without any fees or commissions, without any corruption, without any authority.
And that’s how a woman who’s approaching her 80th birthday has turned into a crypto-grandma, saving crypto for her grandkids. You never know, maybe it’s really going up because there’s a whole bunch of crypto-grandmas in developing countries putting their money in there.
From an entrepreneurial standpoint, let’s applaud the Coinbases around the world and the entrepreneurs who are making this tech accessible and super reliable.
Nothing makes more noise than an idea that people were waiting for, all without knowing it.
HOLD.
