Anyone can become a creator.
Last week I did my first Clubhouse panel and I enjoyed it a lot. The app is well done, and it’s good that as a moderator you have lots of control over the room and the interactions.
Clubhouse, Patreon, OnlyFans, Ghost... the list of creator tools is infinite and you don’t need to be a prophet to understand what’s happening: the change that occurred at the company level, with scalability becoming an industrial phenomenon, is now rising at the individual level.
Anyone can become a creator.
And the creation economy is going to boom.
First, because there are lots of talented people in lots of niches: people who have a certain skill set, tone, views that resonate with a small section of the mass market. The interesting thing with the creator economy is that you don’t need big numbers to make a living. 1000 fans are enough to make $120K per year with a $10 monthly subscription.
So just like there’s an infinite supply of morning cereals with an infinite number of flavors and brands, there are an infinite number of creators. Some are serious. Some are fun. Some are healthy. Some are toxic. Some people only eat one box, some people eat them all.
The second massive thing is that since it’s such an opportunity on the individual level, there will be huge opportunities on the startup level because these creators need infrastructure to thrive: a payment system, marketing interface, automation, distribution channels. There’s the real promise of creating a very healthy loop as tools empower creators, creators pay tools, tools get better, creators get better, etc. Being able to build this kind of loop in a totally new industry is not that common.
And funnily enough, creators consume creators - the speed at which money circulates between them is a very underrated phenomenon. Creators will generate their own value creation just as much as they are going to grow things for outsiders.
No field of human knowledge and passion will be left out: OnlyFans was one of the first because, hey, the internet is for porn. But we’re going to see the same thing all over, the OnlyFans for Greek philosophy, the OnlyFans for needlework, no limit. At The Family we’ve been bullish on this industry for a long time, so if you are building a tool for creators, ping me - we’re definitely interested.
The Family’s directors share daily insights on building ambitious startups, no matter where you live. Our next 6-week batch starts in April - find out more here 💖
